Nestled amid the residences and showrooms that pepper the city’s trendy Motor City area, Bhoujan is a casual, family friendly restaurant serving Indian comfort food.
The interiors are humble but elegant, with warm tones giving a very homely vibe. They have one wall filled with colored tribal prints that adds a pop of color to the earthy tones throughout the restaurant. Outdoor seating is also available, which is perfect for the amazing weather we are having recently. Their simple decor complements their motto for serving food that feels home-made.
Bhoujan offers a range of dishes from North India; their menu is very extensive, including a small menu for Indo-Chinese as well. They also have a Snack/Chaat Platter (AED 25) available from 3-7PM. They also have daily combo specials and set meals to choose from during lunch hours.
Upon entering Bhoujan, we were greeted graciously and seated right away. The manager came to our table to welcome us, as well as letting us know what dishes are their specialty and giving us suggestions on what to order for lunch.
We started with Bhoujan’s famous Pani Puri Shots (AED 16) and Bhel Puri (AED 16). The Pani Puri shots were presented in a simple, but unique way, with the pani being inside the shot glass and the puri balanced on top. The portion contained 6 shots and was served with sweet chutney. The Bhel Puri was sweet and not too moist, which was exactly the way it should be. It was a delicious start to our lunch.
Then came the Saag Bites and this dish blew our minds! It was an excellent, modern take on the traditional Punjabi favorite, sarson da saag (vegetarian delight made from mustard leaves) and makki di roti (corn flour bread). It was a bite-sized version with feta cheese on top and we could not stop eating these. This dish is offered complimentary to all Bhoujan guests and I can assure you that you will fall in love with it. After the Chaat course and the yummy Saag Bites, we ordered Mutton Seekh Kebab (AED 38) and Chicken Malai Tikka (AED 32); both were served on a hot plate. The mutton was cooked perfectly in Indian spices and grilled in the tandoor. The chargrilled Chicken was well done in a marinade of cream, cheese and garlic paste. Since I am a fan of grilled food, I absolutely loved the taste of both these dishes!
Just before we could decide the main course, the manager brought out a special appetizer made just for us. It was called Fish Kupat; it was made in schezwan and hot garlic sauce. The fish was soft and bursting with flavor. I have to say it was my favorite appetizer and I am so thankful that they made it for me! For the main course, we decided to order both the cuisines; Chicken Hyderabadi (AED 36) with Butter Naan (AED 6) and Chicken Chilli (AED 36) with Egg Fried Rice (AED 25). Chicken Hyderabadi was a mix of sweet and spicy Hyderabadi masalas, coconut and yogurt. The chicken with the butter naan was outstanding and it felt just like home! The Chicken Chilly was a little chewy, but the gravy was absolutely delicious and so was the egg fried rice.
We ended our lunch with the delectable and sweet Gulab Jamun (AED 16). It melted in my mouth and was the perfect end to a scrumptious, home-made lunch! “It’s a home away from home”; this is how the owner, Mr.Gandhi described his restaurant and that is exactly how I would describe my overall experience at Bhoujan! I recommend this place to anyone who wants a taste of Indian home food, with brilliant service and affordable prices.
